Emery, John J. |

Dec.
31, 1920 — March 17, 2010
John Joseph Emery, 89, of Fairfield Glade,
formerly of Portage, MI, passed away at the stroke
of midnight on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 2010,
with family by his side after a lifetime of
dedication and service to God, family, country and
Notre Dame. In accordance with his wishes, cremation
has taken place. A memorial service was held
Saturday, March 20, at St. Francis of Assisi church
in Fairfield Glade. There will also be a memorial
service at St. Catherine of Sienna Church in
Portage, MI, at a later date pending final
arrangements.
Mr. Emery was born in Chicago, IL, on New Year's
Eve, 1920, to Herbert J. and Marcia (Leach) Emery,
the first of five children. The Great Depression
soon ensued and the Emery family wasn't immune to
the hardships of the time, moving into a small
apartment on Chicago's South Side. John helped the
family by selling newspapers on the corner of 47th
and Greenwood and being a Western Union messenger.
It was during his childhood that he developed his
life long love of Notre Dame football, listening to
Fighting Irish games on the family's living room
radio. Consulting no one, he enlisted in the U.S.
Coast Guard in 1940. John spent most of WWII in
Alaska and wound up his service at the Manistee, MI,
Coast Guard station in 1946. It was there that he
met the first love of his life, Katherine
Korzeniewski. They were united in marriage that year
and had their first of eight children a year later.
Two children later and aspiring to a better life
for his family, John followed his dream and applied
for admission to the University of Notre Dame. To
his amazement he was accepted. The family lived in "Vetville"
on campus, where other veterans attending Notre Dame
on the GI Bill after the war resided with their
families. Before he graduated in 1953, two more
children were born. The family then moved to
Elkhart, IN. During this time, John was employed by
the South Bend Electric Company as an account
manager. He also sold insurance, among other part
time jobs, to support his family, which had grown to
eight children. John served his church, St. Thomas
the Apostle, in many capacities, among them the
Knights of Columbus (Fourth Degree), Holy Name
Society, Choir and was Scout Master of the Cub Scout
troop.
John moved the family to Kalamazoo, MI, in 1969
when he accepted a position with Klose Electric Co.,
where he worked as a sales representative until
retiring in 1985. His dear wife Kate passed away
January 7, 1977.
While attending a Cursillo in Battle Creek, MI,
he met Joyce McKay, who had lost her spouse, Donald
McKay, after a loving 21-year marriage that also
bore eight children. John and Joyce were united in
marriage on October 22, 1977.
In the spring of 1991, John and Joyce moved to
Fairfield Glade, TN, to enjoy a very active
retirement. Their activities included square
dancing, card groups, international travel and as
always, involvement with their church. John was an
essential fixture at all-important family events,
traveling around the country to attend weddings,
graduations, baptisms etc., and will be dearly
missed, especially during the football season. His
loyal fanaticism to the Fighting Irish will be an
enduring family legacy.
John is survived by his wife, Joyce (Irish McKay)
Emery; sisters, Clara (Vern) Klingler of
Indianapolis, IN, Marjorie (Stewart) McDonnell of
Michigan City, IN, and Barbara Coulomb of Carol
Stream, IL; daughters, Karen (Ken) VanderPol of
Battle Creek MI, Mary (Gary) Wager of Portage MI,
Eileen (Roger) Pressler of Elkhart, IN, Diane (Mike)
Slatton of Knoxville and Laura Boughner of Richmond,
VA; sons, Bill (Gail) Emery of Portage, MI, and Al
(Maria) Emery of Richland MI; and stepchildren, John
McKay of Anchorage, AK, Kathy (Jonathan) McKay of
Benton, ME, Mary (Robert) Alexander of Plainwell,
MI, Ann (George) Bryson of Anchorage AK, Beth McKay
of Anchorage, AK, Scott McKay of El Cajon, CA, and
Doug McKay of North Hills CA. John is also survived
by 27 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
